Wii broke

We bought a Wii for our kids early last year. It stopped working a month or so after the warranty expired.

The red light comes on, and the console makes a whirring sound but cannot see anything on the screen. Disconnected everything and reconnected after a few hours.

I contacted nintendo support and they were unable to help over the phone. They have asked me to send the unit in for repair at a cost of $82.50.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
